Tribunal in the UK has reviewed a serious case involving a consultant anaesthetist who admitted to leaving a patient unattended during surgery. The case has sparked discussions about patient safety, professional responsibility, and healthcare standards.
The Incident
In September 2023, Dr. Suhail Anjum, a 44-year-old consultant anaesthetist at a hospital in Greater Manchester, left a patient under general anaesthesia without proper supervision. Colleagues reported the incident, which led to a hospital investigation and formal proceedings by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS).
During the hearing, Dr. Anjum admitted that leaving the patient unattended was a serious lapse in judgment. The incident, reported by a colleague, was confirmed by Anjum, who described his actions as “shameful” during the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) proceedings that began on September 11, 2025.
Patient Outcome
The patient ultimately received the full treatment without harm, and the surgery was completed successfully. Nevertheless, leaving a patient in this condition is considered a significant breach of medical standards, as anaesthetists are responsible for constant monitoring during procedures.
