A national address and statements made by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on December 14, 2025, following a deadly terrorist shooting attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney during the “Chanukah by the Sea” (or “Hanukkah by the Sea”) celebration.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “This is a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which should be a day of joy.
An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian.
This afternoon there has been a devastating terrorist incident at Bondi at the Hanukkah by the Sea celebration.
My message to Jewish Australians is that your fellow Australians stand with you tonight in condemning this act of terror, in condemning this outrage.
One of the Jewish community leaders said to me that we know where antisemitism leads, that it leads to an attack on everyone, not just Jewish Australians.
And this attack at Bondi Beach, of all places, a place of celebration, a place where people particularly in Sydney but from all over the world come to enjoy each other’s company.”
The attack occurred on the evening of December 14, 2025—the first day of Hanukkah—which targeted a large gathering of the Jewish community organized by Chabad of Bondi. Gunmen opened fire, killing at least 12 people (reports vary slightly between 11 and 12) and injuring around 29 others. Australian authorities, including NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon, declared it a terrorist incident due to the timing, targeting of the Jewish event, weapons used, and discovery of improvised explosive devices.
